Axis Deer - History
Axis Deer (also called Chital and Spotted Deer) are native to Indian Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Sikkim and introduced to Australia, New Zealand, the continental United States and Europe, where they became favorites of parks and zoological gardens. They are the most numerous and widespread of all introduced deer.

Deer are very ancient animals, they appeared in the Eocene as small chevrotain-like creatures, which browsed and ate fallen fruit. Like the chevrotains, deer use fermentation in their gut to digest plant material more efficiently - called rumination. In the Oligocene, when the forests began to open up, ancestors of deer grew larger and formed herds for safety. The first horned Deer appeared in the Miocene, they used the horns to fight.

Axis Deer breed throughout the year. Males in velvet antlers can breed. The does are productive from 2 years to at least age 15. Axis Deer usually mate in spring and after the gestation period of 8-8.5 months the does give birth to one, rarely two fawns.
The babies are often left alone hidden in dense cover while the mother forages nearby and returns only to nurse them. Fawns begin grazing at about 5 weeks and become independent at 1 year old, but young females stay with their mother up to 2 years. In a well managed, low predation situation the reproduction of Axis Deer rates 90% and the fawn survival reaches 95%.
