Axis Deer - Handling
Nowadays Axis Deer are very popular as tame animals, decorating parks and recreation areas. They are easy to catch and keep, but pay attention. The tame Axis Deer don't like to be contained in small cages. When alarmed they can be calmed down by placing them in the dark. All deer are hyper tense and may die of "white muscle disease". This condition is when the tension squeezes all the blood from the muscles and kills the animal quickly. So it isn't recommended to catch Axis Deer with a net. There are special capture facilities ranging from expensive to cheap pens and sheds.
To transport deer you should provide them with a good bed of hay and fresh water. Bucks are recommended for transport after they have dropped the antlers or while in the velvet. By the age of 5 a buck makes a trophy. The best trophy antlers range from 30 to 36 inches. Axis Deer don't tolerate velvet harvesting.

Axis Deer - Management
9 Axis Deer were introduced to Hawaii as a game species in 1959. By 2000 they estimated about 4,000 with another 20,000 individuals projected by the year 2008. Australia has a similar problem. Deer feed on almost everything and have decimated the unique dry land forests and have already made dust bowls of larger areas. The harm these animals do to public lands far overweighs their benefit as a recreation or meat resource. People say it would have been better if Axis Deer and other mammals have never been introduced.
